Chitresh Das Institute classes are led by teachers who were trained by the great kathak master, Pandit Chitresh Das. CDI teachers are committed to nurturing the whole student, mind, body and spirit, through the art of kathak dance.
Presenting world class performances of traditional and innovative Indian classical dance and music as well as cross-cultural and cross-genre collaborations.
CHITRESH DAS YOUTH COMPANY:
Pandit Chitresh Das founded a youth company with Charlotte Moraga as the Director in 2002. The Chitresh Das Youth Company (CDYC) was formed to provide youth with the opportunity to study directly under this great master. Charlotte Moraga, who directed the Youth Company for over a decade under Pandit Das, continues to provide the intensive training and pre-professional performance experience. In addition to training in technique and theory, members learn history, philosophy, mathematics and spirituality that form the foundation of kathak and the philosophy of Pandit Chitresh Das.
NEXT GENERATION ARTIST DEVELOPMENT:
The Next Generation Artists Development program will provide selected artists with:
1. Intensive, transformative training in kathak dance technique, movement, theory, upaj (improvisation) and performance
2. Exposure to master artists in related forms (percussion, vocal and others)
3. Guidance in navigating the artist path
4. Performance opportunities to hone one’s craft, develop an artistic voice and build community support
5. Provide next generation artists with funding to create and present original works
WHAT IS BHARATA NATYAM?
Bharata Natyam is an ancient South Indian classical dance form which is over 2000 years old. It combines rhythm, body movement and facial expressions. The themes in the dances in Bharatha Natyam are drawn from the Hindu religion and mythology. Mastery over this dance form requires many years of mental and physical discipline. Bharata natyam is an outward expression in movement of inner spiritual feelings.
ABOUT NATYANJALI SCHOOL OF DANCE
Pronounced as Naat-yahn-jali, which means an offering of dance, Dr. Malini Krishnamurthi established the Natyanjali School of dance in 1980 for the following purposes:
~ To nurture a passion for Bharata Natyam
~ To bring awareness to western societies about classical Indian Dances especially Bharata Natyam
~ To preserve and promote Bharatha Natyam
~ To support humanitarian causes

School of Kathak Dance was established by the talented Anuradha Nag in 1992. The name was coined by the illustrious doyen of Kathak, Padmavibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj. Tarangini aims to contribute to the training of current & future generations in the field of Kathak and keeping them informed about the rich cultural heritage of India. Based in San Jose, CA, Tarangini School of Kathak Dance strives to achieve its mission, as follows:
Teaching and promoting the knowledge and awareness of the North Indian classical dance form known as Kathak.
Creating international interest in the community through multicultural stage and television programs for various organizations and educational institutions.
Providing learning opportunities for talented and /or low- income students through free tuition.
Sponsoring visiting dancers and accompanying musicians through performances and workshops (artist in resident programs) to preserve and expose the heritage of the dance form.
To give the students self confidence, exposure through stage appearances and also be able to give them the opportunity to perform with live musicians just like one would in India.
Students are taught how to teach and pass on this rich heritage to the newer generations in order to preserve the art form and also given teaching opportunities.
Offering Kathak dance as an outlet for creative self expression for all ages.
