Combining the best of both Eastern and Western teaching methods, I hope to instill in the students a love for dance. The students start in small groups learning the basics - posture, movements, rhythms, gestures from my able staff members under my continuous supervision. As they mature in age and technique, I personally groom them further in developing a deeper understanding of the dance form and enhancing their performance by working on - grace, endurance, sensitivity and presentation. While audio or video tools may be supplementary, I believe in a one - on - one approach much like the oral and visual learning that is the hallmark of my 'tradition'. - Ramya
Arpana means 'offering' in Sanskrit and it is with this spirit of offering dance to the Divine that the school began. Since humble beginnings in 1982, Ramya Harishankar has personally trained several 100 students in this rigorous art form with more than 150 of them 'graduating' and performing their dance debut or Arangetram. The teaching follows much in the pattern of the 'Guru-Shishya' tradition of yore. The students are not mere enrolees in the school but develop a personal relationship with their teacher over the years, learning many intricacies of the dance form, performance techniques and cultural awareness. Through her school, Ramya has helped build artistic sensitivity, appreciation and understanding of cultural traditions in the community. Her students also acquired physical and mental discipline, strength of character and personalities that have held them in good stead through their high school, college and working careers. Many continue to be a part of the Arpana Dance Company post Arangetram and some have become torchbearers of the form.
"I believe learning a performing art and achieving a certain amount of proficiency requires regular attendance, a good practice schedule, exposure to all dance forms/ dancers, family support, self motivation and an intelligent approach. Even though it may be only an extracurricular activity for many students, the art form itself is no less than any other art or science, requiring years of dedicated mental and physical work. It is a life long journey of growth and learning." - Ramya
"A blaze of glory. Khan's striking, beautiful lament is an extraordinary way to wind down a solo dance career."
—Time Out (London)
A Cal Performances Co-commission
British (by Bangladeshi descent) dancer/choreographer Akram Khan is revered for physically demanding, visually spellbinding solo productions which combine Indian kathak with modern dance in works of sublime storytelling. Seen here in an exclusive West Coast engagement, XENOS is Khan's final solo creation before his planned retirement from solo performance. A powerful work that reveals the beauty and horrors of the human condition through the myth of Prometheus, it is told from the perspective of an Indian soldier recruited to fight in the trenches of World War I for the British Crown. "Xenos" means "stranger" or "alien" in Greek, and Khan's work bravely explores the soldier's alienation as he is trapped between two cultures in the colonial system. Performed with live musical accompaniment. "A work of incredible potency, of emotional and cultural depth that sings and surges with the confidence of an artist at the peak of his powers" (The Stage, London).

Since 1994, Hindu Heritage Endowment has worked to help people and strengthen Hindu communities around the globe.
If you are one who has been touched by Hindu thought and culture, you may wish to further enrich your life by giving back to Sanatana Dharma in countries around the globe and helping preserve its rich heritage for future generations. Hindu Heritage Endowment (HHE) provides such an opportunity. A public charitable trust recognized by the United States government, HHE was created to maintain permanent endowments for Hindu projects and institutions worldwide. Its endowments benefit orphanages, children's schools, ashrams and temples. They support priests and publish books; and they are designed to continue giving that financial support year after year, decade after decade, century after century.
The staff at HHE is one-pointed in their dedication to seeing that qualified donations will be used effectively for the purposes intended. Each beneficiary must give a detailed yearly report on its income from HHE and a schedule of how the next year's funds will be spent before funds are issued. We take it as a sadhana to see that your gifts meet their purpose.
Please place Hindu Heritage Endowment in your will, your year-end giving and/or your monthly budget. Whether you are inspired to give a few dollars to support orphanages or bequest millions in your will, write, give us a call or look us up on the Internet. Find out how to enrich your life by helping to preserve the treasures of a profound heritage for generations now living or as yet unborn.

Investing in Nature
Five-year Impact Report to the Community
In 2014, an overwhelming 68% of voters approved Measure Q, the Open Space, Wildlife Habitat, Clean Water, and Increased Public Access Funding Measure, a $24 annual parcel tax to fund the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority. Measure Q’s purpose is to protect and preserve natural open space areas for future generations by improving parks, open spaces, and trails; protecting water resources to prevent pollution and improve local water quality; preserving wildlife habitat; expanding public access; enhancing environmental education; and protecting scenic hillsides. In its first five years, Measure Q funded a doubling of the number of acres protected as open space in the Authority’s jurisdiction to almost 30,000 acres – including a once-in-a-generation acquisition of almost 1,000 acres of long threatened open space in the North Coyote Valley.
I’m so proud of what the Authority has been able to accomplish with the public’s strong support. The Measure Q-funded projects and programs in this report highlight the significant investments we are making together for the health of nature and people – investments that are supporting nature in and near our communities for clean air and water, protecting wildlife, their habitats and movement corridors, protecting natural areas and agricultural lands for their many community benefits, providing opportunities for healthy outdoor recreation, and enhancing our resilience to a changing climate.
Working closely with public agencies, non-profit organizations, and foundations, the Authority has effectively leveraged Measure Q funds to attract other public and private funds to protect open space, water resources, wildlife habitat, and agricultural lands, and to expand public access opportunities and multi-use trails. Through the Authority’s Urban Grant Program, funded by Measure Q, we’ve brought nature to urban communities across the jurisdiction, investing over $2.8M in over 30 projects to green our neighborhoods, seed community gardens, create parks, and connect children and families to nature through environmental education programs.
With the support of Measure Q, the Authority has efficiently and effectively invested in high-priority, high-impact projects to improve our quality of life. And these expenditures have resulted in an impressive return on investment – for every $1 of Measure Q funds spent, we’ve been able to attract $3 in public and private partnership funds for conservation, restoration, and recreation projects.
As former Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell has said, we’re in the business of forever. Thanks to your support of Measure Q, the Authority’s investments in nature today are essential down payments on a livable future for many generations to come.
